Forrests Oboe Gouging Machine
  • Designed and built in Germany to our specifications and available exclusively from Forrests. Made of the finest materials and machined to the highest standards possible.
  • The base and bed are machined from one piece of billet aluminum for the best balance of strength, weight, and rigidity, then anodized for long life.
  • The blade carriage is machined from one piece of solid brass to ensure long lasting shoes.
  • The carriage rides on two linear motion ball bearings sliding over a large hardened and ground arbor to ensure easy movement with no play or flex.
  • The hardened and ground blade is easily adjusted for side alignment and depth of cut using three adjusting screws.
  • The gouge thickness is easily adjusted using one adjusting screw.
  • The cane is clamped in the bed for gouging both vertically (by the spring loaded hold down arms), and horizontally (by the spring loaded end stop).
What's the difference between single and double radius?
A single radius machine is designed to gouge with the carriage and blade centered in the bed. A double radius machine is designed to gouge with the carriage and blade slightly offset.
The result? The cane from a single radius machine changes thickness from center to edge at a constant rate, there is no spine. The cane from a double radius machine changes thickness faster near the center, resulting in a subtle spine in the gouge.

Which is better? It's a matter of opinion, some like one, some the other. And some say it makes no difference in the real world.

Gouging Machine
This beautifully made German machine is a truly unique design. After trimming to length on the included guillotine, the cane is clamped in the bed for gouging both vertically (by the spring loaded hold down arms), and horizontally (by the spring loaded end stop). Gouging is quick and easy, with the carriage traveling on ball bearings, and the arbor of hardened and ground steel.
Are you tired of having to send out your machine to have the blade sharpened? Because of this machine's revolutionary design and superb construction, you can do it yourself! When the blade gets dull, just remove it, rotate it 120 degrees, and bolt it back in place, with no readjustment needed. Voila, a new, sharp, cutting surface! When all 3 cutting surfaces are dull, just replace the blade. No downtime of your machine, no complicated blade re-adjustment, and no frustration. Of course, if you enjoy spending time doing battle with your machine, rather than gouging cane, this may not be the machine for you!
The oboe machine is available with an 11mm bed, the most commonly used, or a 10mm bed, if you use very small diameter cane. The English Horn machine has a 12.5mm bed.

The machine size is defined by the diameter of the bed (most oboe machines are 11 mm) and the blade. Forrests' originally sold the 11 mm oboe machine with an 11.8 mm blade and shoe, we now sell it with an 11.6 mm blade and shoe.
We originally sold the 10 mm oboe machine with a 10.73 mm blade, we now sell it with a 10.55 mm blade.
There should be a 4 digit number engraved on the blade holder; this is the blade size without the decimal point. If there is nothing engraved on the blade holder it probably uses the 11.8 mm blade.
If the machine was not sold by Forrests we have no way of knowing what size blade was used, and can not guarantee that any blade we sell will fit.
