What are all these different bassoon plaques?
Flat Plaques
Flat plaques are made of blued steel or brass.
Contoured Plaques
Contoured plaques are thicker in the middle than the sides, so when the reed is pushed against the plaque it doesn't
get flattened. They can be made of wood, nickel silver, nickel plated nickel silver, or plastic.
Plastic and wood plaques can't dull your knife, but some people find that the knife digs into the plaque and pulls it out of the reed.
Most contoured plaques are arrow shaped (roughly triangular).
Some people feel that metal plaques might dull their knife, but they stay in the reed better.

Yes, they now make an electric plaque! This is an illuminated frosted plastic contoured plaque. The light strength
is adjustable to make is easy to judge the reed's thickness in any ambient light conditions, even a darkened
orchestra pit.
So which one should I buy?
Whichever style you prefer! If you don't have a preference yet, the G-13-F and G-13-R are good reliable metal plaques, the
G-23 is an excellent inexpensive plastic plaque.
Plaque preference is a matter of choice, there is no right or wrong. One thing there is no question about is that
plaques are small and easy to lose. So buy several, they're cheap and indispensable!
