Forrests Music

About Forrests Music

Serving oboists, bassoonists, and woodwind players from Berkeley since 1944 — instruments, supplies, repairs, and expert guidance.

Serving the Double Reed Community Since 1944

Forrests Music has been serving oboists, bassoonists, and woodwind players since 1944. What began as a small Berkeley repair shop has grown into a trusted destination for double reed instruments, supplies, repairs, and expert guidance, serving generations of students, educators, freelancers, and professional musicians.

Whether you're purchasing your first reed knife, searching for the right bocal, comparing professional instruments, or bringing a well-loved instrument in for repair, our goal has always been the same: to provide knowledgeable, personal service backed by decades of experience.

Rooted in Berkeley

Forrests has been part of Berkeley's musical community for more than 80 years. Our focus has always been on the unique needs of double reed players, with a carefully selected inventory of instruments, reeds, cane, tools, cases, sheet music, and accessories, supported by a repair shop specializing in double reeds and woodwinds.

We believe that choosing the right instrument or accessory shouldn't be rushed. That's why we encourage instrument and bocal trials, take the time to answer questions, and work closely with each customer to help them find the right fit.

A Tradition of Continuity

One of the things that makes Forrests unique is its continuity. Throughout its history, the shop has remained independent, with ownership passed from long-time owners to long-time employees who helped build its reputation. Rather than changing hands through outside acquisition, Forrests has been entrusted to the people who know it best and who share its longstanding commitment to serving the double reed community.

Today, Cynthia Hanson and Audrey Jackson continue that tradition, building on decades of experience and relationships with musicians, teachers, schools, and repair professionals. Their stewardship reflects the same values that have guided Forrests for generations: specialized expertise, thoughtful service, and a genuine commitment to helping musicians find the instruments, supplies, and support they need.
