GOUGERS, PRE GOUGERS, PROFILER, ETC.Profilers
Bassoon Reed Tip Profiler. A wonderful
machine for any serious bassoonist. As your hand rests on the beautifully
shaped and finished wooden knob, the carriage slides effortlessly back
and forth on its ball bearings, easily removing cane as the precision
ball bearing riding on the hardened steel pattern insures each reed
is the same thickness and profile. Both the finished tip thickness and
the shaving thickness are easily adjustable. With this machine you can
quickly turn a reed blank (either your own or our #N-02) into a finished
reed
Gougers
Gouging Machine.
This beautifully made German machine is a truly unique design. After
trimming to length on the included guillotine, the cane is clamped in
the bed for gouging both vertically(by the spring loaded hold down arms), and horizontally (by the spring loaded end stop). Gouging is quick and easy, with the carriage traveling on ball bearings, and the arbor of hardened and ground steel. Are you tired of having to send out your machine to have the blade sharpened? Because of this machine's revolutionary design and superb construction, you can do it yourself! When the blade gets dull, just remove it, rotate it 180 degrees, and bolt it back in place, with no re-adjustment needed. Voila, a new, sharp, cutting surface! When both cutting surfaces are dull, just replace the blade. No downtime of your machine, no complicated blade re-adjustment, and no frustration. Of course, if you enjoy spending time doing battle with your machine, rather than gouging cane, this may not be the machine for you! The oboe machine is available with an 11mm bed, the most commonly used, or a 10mm bed, if you use very small diameter cane. The English Horn machine has a 12.5mm bed.
The machine size is defined by the diameter of the bed (most oboe machines are 11 mm) and the blade.
Forrests' originally sold the 11 mm oboe machine with an 11.8 mm blade and shoe, we now sell it with an 11.6 mm blade and shoe.
The size should be stamped on the brass blade holder, if not it probably uses the 11.8 mm blade. If the machine was not sold by Forrests we have no way of knowing what size blade was used, and can not guarantee that any blade we sell will fit. Gouging Machines. RDG. Available in models for oboe and English horn, These gougers arrive at your door set up and ready to use. Adjustments are easy to make and, on special order, and at additional cost, we can even make the bed adjustable within a 1mm
(+/-) range. The bearings of the tool carriage are perfectly aligned and travel smoothly on the ground steel arbor. The carriage is guided by an "inboard" ball bearing which permits easy access to the blade and the cane being gouged. Vertical and horizontal blade adjustments are controlled by screw gears in both directions. A cane guillotine is mounted on the gouger base plate. The standard oboe bed is 11mm, resulting in a gouge ratio of .60 mm to .45 mm. On special order, 10.5 mm bed models can be ordered at 10% additional charge. However, most oboists use the standard gouger for the full range of cane diameters from 10 to 11 mm. The standard English horn bed is 12.5mm.
