Gouging Cane
Select a straight piece of cane, the cane must lie flat in the
gouger bed.
Trim both ends of the cane with the guillotine; this will assure
that the ends are square.
Pre-gouge the cane; we recommend either the Parkes pre-gouger
(H-40) or the RDG pre-gouger (H-19 or H-20).
Open the hold down arms by pushing the cocking levers towards
the ends of the gouger until the arms lock in the open position.
Push in on the end stop lever, place the cane in the bed, and
release the hold down arms (To release the hold down arms open
the hold down arms a little further by pushing on the arms themselves,
not the cocking lever, and then release the arms).
Release the end stop lever.
Gouge the cane using full strokes, from end stop to end stop.
When the ball bearing on the carriage contacts the depth control
bar, turn the cane in the bed and give it a few more strokes.
Adjusting the Gouge Thickness
To adjust the gouge thickness, loosen the bolts holding the bed
in place (from the underside of the gouger). For thicker gouged
cane, move the bed a little towards the right end, for thinner
gouged cane move the bed a little towards the left end. Don't
forget to tighten the bolts holding the bed!
Adjust the carriage end stops. When the carriage is against the
front, or left, end stop the blade should be about 1 mm beyond
the end of the cane. When the carriage is against the rear, or
right, end stop the blade should be about 1 mm from the end of
the cane.
Adjusting the shaving
thickness
Turn the shaving adjustment screw clockwise for a thinner shaving,
counter clockwise for a thicker shaving.
Removing and Replacing
the Blade
Remove the blade mounting screw. You can now remove the blade.
You can rotate the blade 120° twice for new cutting edges.
After the 3 edges have been used, replace the blade.
Centering the blade in
the bed
Normally the blade is centered in the bed. If you prefer an offset
blade, loosen the carriage hold down screws, then use the centering
screws; turn clockwise to move the blade toward the inside of
the bed, counterclockwise to move the blade towards the outside
of the bed. It is very important that the 2 centering screws are
adjusted equally to ensure that the blade travel is parallel to
the bed. Don't forget to tighten the carriage hold down screws.
